To the One Who Saved Me

You didn't know what you were doing the day you saw me in Edinburgh, Scotland. You had no clue  that I was drowning on dry land, being suffocated by the same air that I needed to breath in order to live; even while I stood at the entrance to your Shoppe. You were unaware of the battle in my head as I contemplated the relevance of my life; while I stood at the counter of your café waiting to order tea. You were nothing but a stranger, completely oblivious to the catastrophic events in my life that brought and doused me in unimaginable pain.

You gave me a smile.

You wouldn't have known what that smile meant to me in that moment. You were not aware that the softness of your voice, were the kindest words spoken to me in a month. You didn't know, but when you took your break to join me upstairs for tea, that you saved my life.

We were just strangers.

You didn't know me, yet you sat on that couch with me in silence, as I let the torrential downpour of tears fall from my eyes. You didn't know me, but you were kind enough to fetch me a box of tissues. You didn't know me, but for the first time as I sat in your presence, I had finally accepted the event that happened just one month prior. Without evening knowing me, without even speaking to me, you assured me everything was going to be alright.

You waited . . .

It was then, after seventeen minutes of silence, that you had the courage to speak and shatter the quiet. Those words would have been nothing extraordinary to another woman, but to me, they were everything.

"My mother drinks lavender tea too."

You didn't know it, but you became everything to me that day. You became my hope, that I could get through this. You became the reason I got out of bed, because I knew those chocolate hues would be waiting to see me step through that door. Because I knew, that smile would greet me every day as I stood at the counter. Because I knew, that you would take me upstairs to that book nook with a view and let me spill to you my pain, without judgement.

And you saved me.

And I fell in love with you.
