Born to human parents, raised in a human house, and living around humans all her life, Casey thought that she was human. What else could she be?

Casey grew up in northern Michigan, and as the only child to two parents who were desperate for a kid. iT was easy to say that she was spoiled. She got what she wanted, she had much more than she needed, and she was greedy. But her parents gave in to her every demand without a second thought. She wanted a computer--she got a computer. She wanted a new doll--she got a new doll. She wanted more ice cream for dessert--well, her parents did put up some guidelines. Her room was full of toys and games, stuffed animals and coloring books. Though Casey was clearly privileged and spoiled, her parents loved her, and she loved them more than anything else.

In school, Casey had several friends who she would hang out with, many of them staying her friends well into high school. Parties, dances, sleep overs--it was everything Casey had hoped for and more. Considered one of the "popular girls," Casey spent a lot of time hanging out and having fun, enjoying all the attention she was getting. She couldn't have been happier with how her life was going.

A few weeks after her seventeenth birthday, Casey woke up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain. Every bone in her body felt like it was breaking, her muscles felt like they were being ripped apart fiber by fiber. When she screamed in pain, desperate for help, the sound that came out of her mouth was an animalistic shriek. She screamed again, and the same sound came out. Her parents rushed into her room moments later, her father holding a bat. Her mother screamed, her father just stood there and stared.

That's when she finally noticed it--looking down at herself to try and see where the pain was coming from, Casey saw red and white fur, followed by a dark snout. Further down her body she saw whiskers and canine legs and a long, bushy tail. She wasn't...she wasn't human anymore. She was...a fox.

Casey can't remember anything after that, she must have passed out. When she woke up again, it was light out, probably midday, and she felt absolutely famished. Her mouth was dry as she sat up in her bed, a raging headache pounding at the back of her skull. Her pajamas must have been somewhere under her covers, because she wasn't wearing them anymore, but she didn't notice. Getting out of bed proved to be more difficult than she had intended--everything was spinning, every part of her was sore--but she managed to get to the door on wobbly legs eventually. Her hand rested in the cool metal of the doorknob and gave it a sharp twist--only for it not to budge. Frowning, she tried it again, but it still seemed stuck. So she tried it again, gripping it tightly, and twisted. There was a popping sound, and then the door opened.

Still groggy and in pain, and so very hungry, Casey went to the kitchen, not noticing that the house looked ransacked on her way there. She consumed nearly everything in the fridge--left overs, fruit, a jar of peanut butter. She also downed half a gallon of milk, followed by three cans of pop. Finally, her hunger and thirst had been quenched, and she could--Wait, why was the house a mess? Had someone broken in?

"Mom? Dad?"

No answer. Casey ran to their bedroom--they weren't there. Their closets and dresser were wide open and empty, as was the safe in the wall where they kept most of their savings. All important documents were gone. All of the pictures on the walls--gone. Out the front door, their cars were gone. In the back yard, there was a smoking pile of ash in their firepit, which Casey ran to to investigate. Tiny bits of blackened or browned paper remained, along with metal pegs that were...from a photo album? Casey picked up one of the singed pieces of paper to examine it closer in her hands.

'Certification of live bir...'

The paper slipped from between her fingers, back into the firepit. Her birth certificate. Her parents had burned her birth certificate, likely along with any other sort of legal documents pertaining to her. They had locked her in her room, grabbed their things, and abandoned her. The memories from the previous night came rushing back to her in a painful flood--screaming, pain, fur, tail, legs, fox--

Casey wasn't human anymore. She was something else.

An abomination.

Casey kind of just...sat outside, naked, by the firepit, for hours. Her whole life was turned upside down in the worst way possible. Her parents had abandoned her, she could turn into a fox, she had no record of who she was. Of course, her town still knew about her, she still had friends, there was no way her parents had erased records of her digitally, but could she stay? Was she safe to be around? Would she turn into a beast at any moment?

That night, after sitting outside well after it had gotten dark, Casey made up her mind.

Casey went inside, ate the rest of the food in the fridge, then packed her bags. She stuffed a duffel bag with as much clothing as she could, dug through her sock drawer until she found an old leather wallet full of cash--containing her birthday and Christmas money, along with some that she might have stolen from her parents, which she in no way regretted now--and filled a backpack with boxes and cans of food from the cupboards. Putting on a baggy outfit, raincoat, and sneakers, Casey walked out of the front door of her childhood home, and never looked back.

The next few months basically consisted of Casey walking, stealing, hiding, and discovering just what she was. A lot of the time she slept outside, even in the cold of winter, incase she changed into a fox in her sleep again. And, actually, she did. But she didn't just turn into a fox--she became a cat, a poodle, a hawk, a squirrel--all while she slept. It took her a while to figure out how she could change while she was awake, and the more she changed while she was awake, the less she did while she was sleeping. It was also far less painful than the first time she had changed. Now it was just uncomfortable, not scream-worthy agony.

Stealing was something she wasn't proud of, but Casey had to eat, and she had to eat a lot. Apparently after her first change, something about her physiology had changed internally as well. She could burn off food as fast as she could eat it. She stole food from convienient stores and clothes from thrift stores, just enough to keep herself reasonably clean and fed. Sometimes she would actually make a purchase, if there was something she wanted that was too difficult to steal, or she just felt too bad about being a theif. She was already a monster, she didn't want to be a major criminal, too.

Eventually, she didn't much care about stealing anymore.

She didn't much care about anything.

 Casey's Forms:

Fox:

The form Casey takes most often is the one she turned into first, a red fox. It's warm in the winter, quick to move around in, and nearly everywhere. The form felt...coforting, for some reason, despite the tramatic start to her shiting life.

Cat:

A cat was easy to travel in as well, especially in cities. No one batted an eye at a stray cat, and if she acted cute to the right human, she might even get some food.

Hawk:

Casey was expecting it to be hard to teach herself how to fly, but it was surprisingly simple. Instinct took over immediately, and flying as a bird of prey gave her some sense of strength and freedom.

  • While Lilith was gone, Charlie would come up to Casey and sniff her curiously every now and again. But obeying his owner's wishes, he did not do more than this and mostly kept to himself.

As Casey would roam around through Lilith's home trying to find clothes, she would find a few piles in Lilith's laundry room that she hadn't bothered to pick up. It was a messy assortment of clean and dirty clothes mixed together, but Casey would have known which was which simply by the smell of them.

Miraculously, despite being a bit taller than Casey's human form, it looked like many of Lilith's clothes would fit her. And that went for her shoes as well, which sat near the door in a disorganized pile.

Finally, after about an hour or so, Lilith finally returned through the front door, carrying a very full grocery bag. Charlie immediately ran over to greet her, barking happily.

"Yes, hello little monster," Lilith mumbled as she reached down to give Charlie a small pet. "Hey, you...how are you doing?" She asked Casey, knowing full well she couldn't answer but she wanted to ask anyway.

"I hope you appreciate this. This food was not cheap...but it should keep you happy." Lilith said as she began to take out the cans of cat food from the bag and onto the kitchen counter. She grabbed the nearest bowl that was still somewhat clean and opened the can, dumping the food into it. It was some sort of fish pate, by the smell of it.

"All right. Sorry for the wait. Dig in." Lilith said as she walked over to Casey and set the bowl down in front of her. She then moved on to making Charlie's food, dumping some kibble into a bowl for him, which he chowed down on happily.

  • Rey gave a small chuckle. Raspberries. Maybe it was a silly name, but who was she to judge? Especially on this new planet - well, new to her at least. A brief silence commenced, followed by Casey's next question which surprised Rey. Out of all the things to ask about, why sunsets? There was nothing wrong with the question of course, but it really made her think about it as she had never been asked before.

"Well..." she started as she looked up and saw the beautiful array of colours from Earth's own sunset. "It's a bit like this...except sometimes, depending on where you are, there can be multiple suns. It's beautiful to watch two suns set together. If you ever get the chance, you should see it for yourself," Rey said with a smile. There was no tellling if Casey would actually get that opportunity, but who knows?

Upon hearing the next question, Rey was at least glad that Casey was considering sleeping inside, and not out here with the potential cold and risk of predators. A compromise indeed; and Rey accepted it. "Yes, I do have a spare blanket. It's yours if you want it," she said as her smile grew a bit wider. She would then return to poking the fire some more, although it seemed like the two of them would be heading to bed soon.

Rey wasn't surprised at all by Casey's response. Despite only knowing the shapeshifter for a few hours, she felt she was starting to really understand who she was. A loner, a drifter, someone who wants companionship but for some reason can't get it. Someone who doesn't want to get their hopes up so they won't even try to find a better place. Rey could relate to some of this, probably more than she even realized.

"I see," she said softly as she gave the fire one last good poke. It would probably die soon, but that's okay. It was enough to keep them warm and she could easily make another one tomorrow if need be. Rey could tell that Casey wasn't being entirely honest with her or herself, but she wouldn't dare pry. Although she felt sorry for the girl, it really wasn't her business.

"Well...no matter what planet you're on, being alone is hard...sometimes you need people, whether you like it or not...and sometimes they show up when you least expect it," she said, almost as though she was trying to teach Casey something; but she was really more talking about her own experience. There was a time when Rey didn't think she needed anyone either. She had gotten so good at looking after herself. But then BB-8 came along...and then Finn...and now she couldn't imagine her life without them.

  • "Oh, well...if you say so," Rey said, believing her words to be true as she reached out and ate a small handful of the berries. They were ripe and delicious. Perhaps she'd be able to find some more before leaving this place. She would need a snack on the ride home after all. "Mm, they're good. I'll store the rest in the mini-fridge," she said before gently placing them in a small bag and keeping them refrigerated so they wouldn't go bad.

Rey would then follow Casey back outside and sit across from her on the other side of the fire. She too, enjoyed the presence of the controlled flames. She had spent more than a couple nights on Jakku in front of a fire; on the rare occasion that she was able to make one herself, or borrow the warmth from another Scavenger's fire. Despite being such a hot planet, Jakku was unbearably cold at night.

The young Jedi didn't imagine that this planet would get too cold at night, but how could she really know for sure? She was saddened to hear when Casey rejected her offer for the bed. Rey could tell that she really wanted to say yes, but something was holding her back. Embarassment, shame, or something else; she wasn't certain.

"Alright, if you change your mind, please let me know. It's no trouble," Rey assured her before reaching out to poke the fire lightly with a nearby stick. As she did so, she thought of what else she could say to make conversation and try to get to know Casey better. She really wasn't in a hurry to leave. The repairs were halfway done anyway, and she still wanted to help this girl with more than just clothes.

"Do you have anyone waiting for you out there? Friends? Family?" Rey asked gently as she pulled the stick back and twirled it around in her grasp. She had a feeling about the answer, but perhaps whatever Casey said was something that Rey could help her with.

  • Lilith sighed to herself as she walked over to one of the living room windows. She pulled back the curtain a bit and cringed when the sunlight began to stream through, causing her to quickly let go of it, holding her head in pain. She hated sunlight. If she never saw the sun again, it would be too soon.

"Hang in there. I'll go out and grab some food for you as soon as it gets dark. You'll just have to wait until then...I'm sorry." Lilith said apologetically as she walked back over to the couch where Casey was sleeping.

She sat down next to her, careful not to disturb her too much, and gently ran her hand through her fur, petting her softly and trying not to hurt her in any way.

"What happened to you?" Lilith asked out loud, fully realizing she was more or less talking to herself. At least, she thought she was. This was one of those times where she wished animals could talk. Then Casey could simply explain her story to Lilith with no problems. But things weren't that simple. Not yet, anyway.

    ----

Time passed, and Lilith eventually left Casey alone, sensing that she was tired and wanted sleep. 5pm rolled around and it was finally dark enough for Lilith to go grocery shopping. Or at least, it would be very soon. Lilith grabbed her phone, wallet, keys, and most importantly, her dark sunglasses which she would put on just before she stepped out of her house. But before she did that, she would give Casey a pat on her head while speaking to her in an encouraging voice.

"Don't worry. I'll be back soon." She then turned to Charlie. "And you? Stay out of trouble. Don't bother her. Got it?" She asked with a frown in his direction. Funny enough, Charlie seemed to understand her, as he gave a small, submissive whine in response.

Lilith then stepped out of the door and shut it behind her, leaving Casey alone in the house, with only another animal to keep her company for the time being.

  • "Oh shit..." Lilith muttered out loud as she examined Casey's leg. She had been a bit too drunk to notice it before, but now she could see that the leg was injured somehow, possibly even broken. This wasn't good. She wasn't a doctor or a vet, but at the same time she wasn't exactly in the mood to head out in the daylight to take Casey to an animal hospital or something. Sunlight gave her a headache and she would only go out if she absolutely had to.

She made a hasty decision to keep Casey here in her home, unless she got worse. Rest and food was probably the best thing for her. At least, that was Lilith's guess.

"Jesus...I'm sorry. I...I didn't notice..." She began softly, under her breath before quickly diverting her thoughts elsewhere.

"Right, sorry. Food. You need food." She said, as if reading Casey's thoughts as she gently placed her back down on the couch, being extra careful with her now that she knew she had an injured leg. Lilith walked back over to the kitchen to grab what was left of the pepperoni and milk. Same as before, she placed one in the saucer and another on a plate before setting it down in front of Casey.

While Casey ate, Lilith examined her fridge to find...nothing. Absolutely nothing. "Damn..." Lilith growled. She'd have to go back to the store. She hated shopping, but there was no other way around it. She needed to buy some proper food for this cat. Maybe some tuna or something. Cats like fish, right?

"Sorry, little guy...or girl. I promise...you won't be eating pepperoni forever." She said from the kitchen as she looked back to make sure Casey was eating what she had given her.

  • Rey would have never admitted it, but she was getting a bit hungry herself. Although she may have left the Scavenger life behind her, she still had the stomach of one. The gnawing hunger felt more like a slight annoyance than anything, and by this point she was very good at ignoring it so she could work.

Busy with the repairs, and checking on the fire every now and then, the time seemed to slip by and Rey lost track of it. When Casey returned, it felt like she had only been gone for a couple minutes. "Oh! You're back," Rey said, wiping her oily hands on her pants as she turned to face her. Rey would follow her back into the ship and saw that she had gathered some berries.

Rey couldn't deny that she very much wanted to have some, but she would wait until Casey had had her fill first before digging in. "Thank you, Casey...good job! You can go ahead first, I'll eat after you," Rey said, as she didn't know that Casey had in fact eaten already, despite it not being satiable enough.

It was starting to get late, and Rey knew there was at least one sun in this solar system that would be going down tonight. She wondered where Casey usually slept, and knew that however those conditions were, sleeping on the Falcon's bed would likely be more comfortable and warm. As though reading Casey's thoughts again (perhaps she was, unintentionally) she turned and asked the question.

"Do you have somewhere to sleep tonight? If not, you can use the ship's bed over there," she said, pointing towards it. "It's not much, just a small mattress and a couple of blankets, but it'd be better than sleeping outside. I don't know how cold it gets here at night, but it would be safer too..." she suggested, hoping that Casey would take up her offer. She felt so bad for the young shapeshifter; she really wanted her to.8905267286?profile=RESIZE_584x

  • "Oh, well..." Rey started, looking up in thought before chuckling lightly to herself. Everywhere in space was both extremely far and close at the same time, depending on one's perspective. "Ajan Kloss is about...1-2 hours away by lightspeed, and about the same distance from Coruscant, which is where I left. These planets are billions of miles apart of course, but with hyperspace travel the galaxy feels smaller, that's for certain."

She couldn't say she wasn't disappointed that Casey didn't want to eat any more of the berries. Perhaps it made her uncomfortable or embarassed. Either way, she wanted to let her know that it wasn't any sort of burden for her to take these things from Rey. She was offering them gladly. "You can take the rest, if you want. I'll be fine," she said with a reassuring smile. Goodness knows she had also spent many years of her life desperate for food. She knew what it felt like to run on empty for so long, and she didn't want Casey to suffer the same fate if she could help it.

Casey's next words confused her at first, but she quickly understood the meaning behind them. She seemed a wanderer, someone traveling from place to place with no clear destination. Rey felt sorry for her, it must have been a terribly lonely and unpleasant life. "Oh...um, okay...I'll try to get a fire going and start repairing the ship," she said, almost reading Casey's mind. She didn't want her doing all the work after all.

Rey followed after her before walking over to a patch of dirt. After digging a small hole and finding some dry branches and twigs, Rey ignited her lightsaber and gently set it over the wood until it caught fire. Once the fire was underway, she began the tedious process of taking apart one of the outer panels on the Falcon to get to the damaged parts. Every now and then she would look around the forest, wondering when Casey would come back.

  • Rey was happy when she saw Casey try the berries. She only wished that she had more food on board. The young Jedi realized that she really ought to carry more food and water for emergencies or situations like this. She'd have to make a point of stocking up when she got back to the Resistance base.

"I'm sorry I don't have more, but please...take all of them," Rey said with a smile as she gestured towards the berries. Casey's next question was a bit of a surprise, as no one had ever asked her this before. She gave a slight frown as she looked around. As far as she knew, there was nothing to cook with onboard, not even a microwave oven. The Falcon simply wasn't built for long-term travel; it had been used for quick trips and smuggling back in the day; hardly what you'd call a live-in vessel.

"Um, sorry...no, I can't cook on board," Rey admitted with a slight shake of her head. "If it wasn't for the crash, I'd be back home by now, so I only brought a little bit of food," Rey then had another thought come to her mind, and she took a couple steps closer to Casey.

"Is there anywhere you'd like to go? On this planet? I was thinking...once the repairs are done, I could take you anywhere you want. It must be hard having to travel on foot, or paw, all the time. If there's somewhere you have in mind, somewhere safer maybe, I could take you there. Think of it as a small way to make up for what I did here," Rey said, gesturing to outside the Falcon and the desecrated forest beyond. She felt a strong twinge of guilt every time she remembered what happened.

  • It's been hard to focus lately, I'm working on replies but they're taking longer than expected. I'm just trying to rest up and feel a bit better.

  • Lilith normally slept like a log, however, her sense of hearing was better than most, being that she wasn't fully human, after all. She stirred awake at the sound of Casey crying out in pain, still in cat form. With a small groan, she slowly rolled out of bed, wearing an oversized black shirt and shorts as her nightwear. She didn't particularly care how she looked at the moment.

Of course, had she known that Casey was really a human in a different form, she would have been a lot more presentable. But currently, she didn't give a damn how she looked.

She assumed that Casey was crying out for more food because she was hungry. Or maybe she needed something else. The cry had sounded a bit painful, which worried Lilith a bit. As quickly as she could (while still half-asleep) she opened her bedroom door and stepped out, rubbing the grit out of her eyes as she did.

"I'm coming...I'm coming...don't worry." She mumbled sleepily as she walked over to the couch where she had left Casey, only to find her sitting on the floor instead. "Hey...what's up? What's the matter?" Lilith asked as she knelt down to gently scoop her up in her arms.

She gave Casey a quick scan over with her orange eyes, which seemed to glow even more brightly in the dimly lit room. She briefly examined the cat in her arms and couldn't find anything obviously wrong with her, so she hoped that the cat would be able to express to her what was wrong in her own way, either with movement or with another sound.
