Malory wasn’t a kid who believed in magic—the tooth fairy, Santa Clause—that was all a bunch of nonsense to her. Those things just weren’t real to her, despite how hard her mother tried to stop her from spoiling Christmas for her younger brothers. When Malory was fifteen, her parents divorced, and her mother took full custody of Malory and her younger twin brothers, Simon and Jarred. No longer being able to afford their home in upstate New York with her income, Malory’s mom packed up the kids and moved them to Maryland, where Malory’s great, great uncle had left a house to the family. Arthur Spiderwick had disappeared one afternoon nearly seventy years ago, and left the house to his closest living relative. That was his daughter, Lucinda, who had been a little girl when he disappeared, but she had been put into a series of care homes after spouting a bunch of nonsense about her father being taken away by fairies and goblins living in the woods around her house, leaving the house to Malory’s mother.

The first week in that house changed Malory’s life forever.

crush 2013 | Explore Tumblr Posts and Blogs | TumgirHer brother, Jarred, discovered a book in a secret room in the attic, written by Arthur. It was filled with drawings, descriptions, teeth, claws, skin, and wings of imaginary creatures, like goblins and sprites, phenoxies and gryphons, dwarves and elves. Now, according to the book, humans can’t naturally see these creatures, they needed to look through a rock with a natural hole in it, or hold a four-leaf clover for a temporary glimpse into the other world. Or, they could soak their eyes in fairy bathwater or hobgoblin spit, giving them what’s called the Sight…forever. Jarred believed every word, and tried convincing his family, but, of course, no one believed him, especially Malory. And she didn’t believe him until she saw Jarred’s twin, Simon, be dragged into the woods by nothing. Turns out, it was a goblin pack, who lived within the woods around the house (also turns out Aunt Lucinda was right), thought that Simon was the twin who had the book. That book, Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastic World Around You, has more information about some of the creatures than those creatures even knew about themselves. That book…That book almost got Malory and her brothers killed while trying to keep it out of the hands of the goblins and their ogre master, Mulgarath. Mulgarath planned on using the information from the field guide to destroy and rule over all other fairies by exploiting their weaknesses Arthur had discovered.

Thankfully, with Malory now convinced, Jarred and her were able to save Simon. The three of them were given the Sight perinatally by a hobgoblin—he very kindly spit in their faces after eating a roasted cat, their roasted cat—making it easier for them to fight the battle they had gotten themselves into. Trolls and goblins sent by Mulgarath terrorized the Grace siblings, their house, their mother. The conclusion of the battle columnated at the Grace family’s new house, ending with their house completely ransacked, filled with dead goblins, and Mulgarath, thankfully, dead, eaten by previously mentioned hobgoblin.

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) - Cinema Cats

Mulgarath was dead, and as far as they knew, the information about Arthur’s book wasn’t spread farther than all the beings that were now currently turning into mush on their kitchen floor. The book was safe, and they were safe. Mostly. Now that they knew about this world, they were a part of it, especially Malory. With her experience in fencing and sword fighting, she became the main hunter and protector of the family. Jarred, when he became an adult, learned how to use a variety of guns, letting him help Malory hunt. Simon, on the other hand, became the researcher of the Grace kids, adding onto their great, great uncle Arthur’s research. Though this time, they kept it a lot more secretive—they didn’t want another battle with an ogre.

daily sarah bolger on Twitter: "Sarah Bolger as Emily Thomas in season 2 of #MayansMC #MayansFX… "

Now, ten years later, Malory is the only one who still lives in the house where all of this started.

At the age of twenty-seven, she was the last member of her family to still live at the estate in Thurmont, Maryland. Her brother Jarred had moved to Northern California, where he kept an eye on the giant and dragon populations. There was a very delicate balance to maintain between the two species that had a habit of killing each other. Simon, on the other hand, had moved back to upstate New York with her mother Helen. Simon got a job with computer programming, and Helen was writing a series of short stories and novels that just happened to reflect real life events a bit too much for Malory’s liking. Especially when she was the one creating the illustrations for said stories.

Malory was…just a bit of an outcast. The people of Thurmont weren’t cruel to her—aside from the odd kids that kept sneaking onto her property—but they definitely kept their distance. Something always weird happened around the Spiderwicks, ever since her uncle had gone missing and his daughter spouted stories about fairies until her dying days. Then Malory’s little family showed up, and well…you shouldn’t cross paths with a black cat or walk under an open ladder, and you shouldn’t talk to the family who speak with monsters. Malory was avoided by most anyone in the town, only a handful of the citizens either didn’t care about her family’s history, or believed her. Chuck, the owner of the local secondhand book shop in town, had his own share of witnessing the strange and unusual. Hell, he even had a brownie living in his shop, who kept the place clean and free of moths. The creature was shy, though, and both him and Malory had only caught glimpses of it, despite all the honey Malory had tried to bribe it with. Chuck was probably the closest person Malory had to a friend, though they didn't hang out outside of the shop.

"Are you sure you're human?"

Malory had been asked this by a Tree Elf that lived in the woods around Malory's house once. The elf had been alive for nearly a century, not wandering much farther than the roots of their birth tree, but Malory saw them often enough while hunting in the area. Of course, Malory's innitial respone was "Of course I am, what else could I be?" And didn't think about it much farther than that. The Tree Elf didn't elaborate, and Malory moved on. Malory didn't have any reason to believe she was anything other than human, and she honestly forgot the conversation shortly afterwards.

Though Malory was unaware, there could be a case made that something wasn't quite...normal, with her.

  • “Oh- I don’t actually work.” Brigit couldn’t help but laugh shortly at the thought. “I can imagine it now, some poor kid having to read a resume hundreds of pages long.” What would a resume for her even look like? At some point, it may read genocide as one of her skills.

“Anyways, I serve this Earth and its inhabitants, no one else.” She has more to say but her focus is derailed as soon as the smell of old knowledge and stories reaches her nose. To some, it may just be their local bookstore, but there’s something that just always lifts Brigit’s spirits when she’s surrounded by books. Eyes close as she takes a quick deep breath. This brings a pleasant smile to her lips. “Mm, cozy store you have here, Chuck.” Maybe it is the peace and tranquility of a bookstore that draws her in.

She follows behind Malory while trying to quickly scan over the shelves. After making a mental note of where she’s spotted some poetry books that must be examined later, she takes a glance back at Chuck for a moment. “I’m Brigit by the way!” And she steps into the staff room with Malory only to be greeted by more books.

“Oh, I could stay here for a while.” She says jokingly while running her hand over the shelved books before taking a seat at the table. “Yes, with sweetener.” She stretches her arms out on the table before lazily folding them. “Hunting? You must be a hunter like my… Hm, a friend of mine. He uses a sword but he hunts people.” It takes her a moment to assemble the correct wording. Not that she was trying to keep a secret but it’s a complicated relationship that she keeps with the father to her child. “What kind of hunting do you do, Malory?” Brigit asks with playful curiosity while steel blue eyes look Malory up and down.

  • Malory might be surprised by some of the things gods and deities used on Earth compared to what they use in their own realms. Brigit’s preferred mode of travel is on the back of a wolf or dragon. At one point in her life, she even led a clan of bounty hunters that would ride into battle via dragons. Before the modern age, it was all fairly normal. Now? There’s so much that could go wrong if she tried landing a dragon in the city or keeping a wolf nearby. Though she has ridden horses all the way up until the early 1900s, a motorcycle is fast, doesn’t feel pain, doesn’t need to eat, and she doesn’t have to worry about the ethics of throwing it at her enemies. Plus, she still gets to feel the wind in her hair whenever she gets to remove her helmet; similar to a dragon, except for the flying and destruction part.

To put it plainly, gods that remain on Earth usually have to adapt to some extent to modern times. There are some things Brigit wishes stayed the same but it was all water under the bridge now.

Malory couldn’t see it, but she flashes a smile and shakes her head. “No, those gods usually keep to themselves.” She can still count the amount of time she’s come across one of the few gods that knew all. Very interesting conversations.

Brigit pulls her helmet off and shakes out the curly red mess of helmet hair. “My work usually keeps me pretty busy. One week I’m in the UK, next I’m in the US, and by the end of the month I’m in Rome.” She explains while shrugging her shoulders before kicking her leg over the bike and getting off. “It’s rare I get enough time to find a bookstore and sit.” It wasn’t the worst lifestyle but there is someone in her life she would make more time for. Remembering her daughter brought a little damper on her mood but she’s quick to bounce back.

“Question for you. I’m assuming that sword belongs to you and you didn’t just pluck it off some dead bloke in the forest.” Brigit has noticed that Malory carries around weapons but doesn’t equip armor of any sort. Was she a fighter that rarely receives lethal hits? Or was she an explorer, only using the sword as a tool to further her journeys? “I don’t see many people just walking around with a sword on their hip anymore. Maybe once upon a time, sure, but not in this digital era. Do you get into many fights here where a sword is best?”

  • - I honestly think that will be plenty for us to start off. For now we can plan on them becoming close friends long term. And her attitude won't scare him off. As is, he tends to make friends with the typical 'outcasts' or those that don't fit in. It's like his own little pack of misfits. Don't want to plan too much that way we can wing it some and see where the creativity takes us. Do you mind starting us off? I can do inbox or comments. Though inbox tends to help me keep track a of which posts I owe a little easier.

  • -I could see Viridian becoming close friends with her. Love interests I typically hold off on matching until we've had a chance to Write together, see character compatibility, and to generally see where things go. Viridian's current location is Bucharest. His home is Sweden, but since this departure from his pack and clan he has chosen to relocate to a different country. Them meeting I'm his current city of residence would probably be best. How you choose to have her get there is up to you.  Does she have a way of telling who is a supernatural and who isn't?

If she comes there in injury and recovery, I could see Viridian potentially helping her heal or relax so that she heals quicker. He may even spare with her and teach her a few things about defending herself against supernatural creatures.

  • - Not off the top of my head. But I usually start with seeing what goals you have in mind for your character or kind of plot/thread you are looking for. Usually gives the best insight into potential tension that can be created.

  • - Thank you for the add and the compliments on my character. He comes across all intimidating but is his own little bean. Would you be interested in plotting something together?

  • She’s got a little fire to her, Brigit thinks to herself while she listens to how Malory speaks. It was better this way in her opinion. It was hard to get a lot done when people gawk and bow when she explains she’s a god. It’s refreshing to be seen as nothing more than yet another item of this continuously evolving planet. Though she can imagine a few gods that would expect to be treated like kings. Ares, Thor, and Zeus are some of the first names that come to mind.

“Telling me what to do already?” She replies and smiles with amusement. “I think I’m going to like you. Yes, I’ll get the wryn out of here for you.” She agrees, already planning on teasing her throughout this job.

She nods when Malory gestures to follow her and does so. “Mhm, I have a bike. You know, with all the modes of transport I’ve used, I could never get used to a car. Feels cramped.” Understandable for someone whose first few modes of transport were on the back of a dragon or a large wolf. Motorcycles suited her just fine but of course, they still felt somewhat restrictive. Not to mention she’s not a fan of the helmets. She’s gotten tired of being pulled over by the police so she forces herself to wear one.

“Did you say a bookstore?” Brigit slips her hands into her pockets while taking another glance around at their surroundings. “It’s been too long since I’ve been in a bookstore.” Everything was still so nice at this time of the year. Winter was starting to come to an end which meant spring was just around the corner. “I’ll follow you over there.”

Her motorcycle is nice but nothing extravagant. It would be pointless to invest too much money into vehicles. In her line of work, vehicles are usually the first things to explode. Plus she’s guilty of throwing a motorcycle or two at others. It’s a black Yamaha MT-09. 2022 model. Her last one found its home in the side of someone’s truck. She pulls as much of her out of her face as possible before sliding her helmet over her head. Again, nothing flashy other than a plain black helmet with a tinted visor. If anyone were to get a closer look at it they could notice a few dings on the helmet. Most likely caused by her using it as a blunt weapon. She’s been known to crack her helmets as well.

Once Malory is off, Brigit turns the bike on and begins following Malory.

  • “You have some questions, I get that.” She smirks and looks out at their surroundings again. “Buuut, I don’t think this is the place you want answers in.” Brigit stands up while white light shines on the ground beside them. It’s her spear that had dropped out of the sky turning into light then vanishing. She remembers the days when everyone could walk around with swords at the hips, spears on the backs, and shields in hand. Even just a few hundred years ago it was normal to walk around with a pistol on your hip. Now? Well, carrying a weapon in the open is the quickest way to gain unwanted attention. It’s all about looking as harmless as you can now.

“They spit acid and they have a mother. Seems like you know what you’re dealing with.” She looks Malory up and down while in thought. Brigit isn’t above taking aid from others that aren’t gods. Most of her hunting parties back in the day only had about two to four gods in them. The rest would be a mix of twenty or so other species ranging from dire wolves to titans. If they were willing to fight then they were good enough for her. Of course, she never promised anyone other than her daughter their safety.

“Gonna need your help, Malory.” She reaches down and grabs Malory’s arm and lifts her to her feet, much like a toddler. “To answer your last question- I’m a god. No, not one that can create whatever I want whenever I want. I can explain more, but that will do for now.” She doesn’t have the time to go into her story of creation and the war all of the gods fought at the beginning of time.

“I’m here to relocate those beasts into an area where they can be free to hunt and be hunted. You know, circle of life, all that good stuff.” Based on the few things Malory has said about the creatures spitting acid, knowing that one of them is the mother, and being more curious as to what Brigit is rather than what just tried eating her; Brigit can assume Malory has run into these before. “So, I’ll trade your information for my information. We got a deal?”

  • What- Haven’t you-?” It comes as a shock to her that some haven’t seen a lot of magic performed. She’s even met some who have never seen magic. Thought for later. For now, she stares down the largest serpent while Malory gets herself up. She crouches slightly and puts a hand out, low vibrations begin to pulse through the air. She’s not sure it would work here, but this is a method she uses to communicate with dragons. The ones that don’t speak at least.

“That should confuse them long enough.” Once Malory called out, Brigantia grabs her spear and turns to run. She notices the wound on Malory’s leg. “Sorry about this!” She positions herself in front of Malory and drops the spear into the ground. Her arm hooks between Malory’s legs, and Brigantia has her in a fireman’s carry.

“Sure wish I was a lightning god right now.” She says as she begins running as fast as she can out of the forest. She’s faster than any human, but not quite as fast as some vampires she’s come to know. Lightning gods and sky gods always have the quickest way of transport. In a snap, they could travel from country to country. War gods had to use their feet or whatever was available to them.

As soon as they make it to a clearing, she sets Malory down. She takes a knee and scans around to see if they had actually lost the beasts back there. After some moments of silence, she drops her spear. Turning to Malory, her eyes go down to the wound. “Looks like they got a piece of you back there.” She offers a warm smile and a hand.

“I’m Brigit. Let me help.” She hovers her hand over the burn and a green glow emits from the wound. “I’d consider this your lucky day, friend. Not everyone gets saved from a god, and a war god at that.” Lost tissue begins to regenerate on her leg and the corrosive spit evaporates. No scarring is left behind. “I should say thank you for finding us a way out though… So thanks.”

  • Brigantia stands at a tall 6’3” and has the build of an athlete. At least she tries to hold onto Malory before letting her fall to the floor. Normally, she’d be checking to make sure people are okay after they bump into her. Any war god’s body isn’t exactly the softest tissue to collide into.

She only has a few seconds to take in the situation that ran into her. Someone is running from this serpent, the same serpent is now eyeing both of them, and this is not the best place to begin fighting or taming this beast.

For now, she will settle with scaring it off. Quickly, her right hand comes above her head with her index and middle finger pointing out. She draws an arch above and flicks her fingers three times, creating yellow sigils that float above her. The entire time she has been whispering commands while reaching behind her jacket. Suddenly, she pulls a white marble orb into view. It begins to emit intense light until it appears as a miniature sun. Finally, each sigil above her explodes with a snap and blinding flashes of light.

After the third burst, Brigantia is sure the serpent is at the very least, dazed from the light show. She looks back to Malory. “Keep runnin’! I can handle this one!” She reaches her right hand out, ready to summon a weapon, should the serpent double down on its attack.

But not only was it going to double down on its attack, but it also had friends to back it up. More movement could be heard coming from nearby trees and bushes. She has to remind herself she isn't here to kill. Nor right now. Palm to the sky, a red sigil forms, close fist, and the sigil expands before vanishing. A sonic boom cracks the sky above before a full metal spear crashes into the Earth. Behind it was an even brighter flash of light. It was in fact energy borrowed from the sun.

    "Actually, we both should leave!"
