Malory wasn’t a kid who believed in magic—the tooth fairy, Santa Clause—that was all a bunch of nonsense to her. Those things just weren’t real to her, despite how hard her mother tried to stop her from spoiling Christmas for her younger brothers. When Malory was fifteen, her parents divorced, and her mother took full custody of Malory and her younger twin brothers, Simon and Jarred. No longer being able to afford their home in upstate New York with her income, Malory’s mom packed up the kids and moved them to Maryland, where Malory’s great, great uncle had left a house to the family. Arthur Spiderwick had disappeared one afternoon nearly seventy years ago, and left the house to his closest living relative. That was his daughter, Lucinda, who had been a little girl when he disappeared, but she had been put into a series of care homes after spouting a bunch of nonsense about her father being taken away by fairies and goblins living in the woods around her house, leaving the house to Malory’s mother.

The first week in that house changed Malory’s life forever.

crush 2013 | Explore Tumblr Posts and Blogs | TumgirHer brother, Jarred, discovered a book in a secret room in the attic, written by Arthur. It was filled with drawings, descriptions, teeth, claws, skin, and wings of imaginary creatures, like goblins and sprites, phenoxies and gryphons, dwarves and elves. Now, according to the book, humans can’t naturally see these creatures, they needed to look through a rock with a natural hole in it, or hold a four-leaf clover for a temporary glimpse into the other world. Or, they could soak their eyes in fairy bathwater or hobgoblin spit, giving them what’s called the Sight…forever. Jarred believed every word, and tried convincing his family, but, of course, no one believed him, especially Malory. And she didn’t believe him until she saw Jarred’s twin, Simon, be dragged into the woods by nothing. Turns out, it was a goblin pack, who lived within the woods around the house (also turns out Aunt Lucinda was right), thought that Simon was the twin who had the book. That book, Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastic World Around You, has more information about some of the creatures than those creatures even knew about themselves. That book…That book almost got Malory and her brothers killed while trying to keep it out of the hands of the goblins and their ogre master, Mulgarath. Mulgarath planned on using the information from the field guide to destroy and rule over all other fairies by exploiting their weaknesses Arthur had discovered.

Thankfully, with Malory now convinced, Jarred and her were able to save Simon. The three of them were given the Sight perinatally by a hobgoblin—he very kindly spit in their faces after eating a roasted cat, their roasted cat—making it easier for them to fight the battle they had gotten themselves into. Trolls and goblins sent by Mulgarath terrorized the Grace siblings, their house, their mother. The conclusion of the battle columnated at the Grace family’s new house, ending with their house completely ransacked, filled with dead goblins, and Mulgarath, thankfully, dead, eaten by previously mentioned hobgoblin.

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) - Cinema Cats

Mulgarath was dead, and as far as they knew, the information about Arthur’s book wasn’t spread farther than all the beings that were now currently turning into mush on their kitchen floor. The book was safe, and they were safe. Mostly. Now that they knew about this world, they were a part of it, especially Malory. With her experience in fencing and sword fighting, she became the main hunter and protector of the family. Jarred, when he became an adult, learned how to use a variety of guns, letting him help Malory hunt. Simon, on the other hand, became the researcher of the Grace kids, adding onto their great, great uncle Arthur’s research. Though this time, they kept it a lot more secretive—they didn’t want another battle with an ogre.

Now, ten years later, Malory is the only one who still lives in the house where all of this started.

At the age of twenty-seven, she was the last member of her family to still live at the estate in Thurmont, Maryland. Her brother Jarred had moved to Northern California, where he kept an eye on the giant and dragon populations. There was a very delicate balance to maintain between the two species that had a habit of killing each other. Simon, on the other hand, had moved back to upstate New York with her mother Helen. Simon got a job with computer programming, and Helen was writing a series of short stories and novels that just happened to reflect real life events a bit too much for Malory’s liking. Especially when she was the one creating the illustrations for said stories.

Malory was…just a bit of an outcast. The people of Thurmont weren’t cruel to her—aside from the odd kids that kept sneaking onto her property—but they definitely kept their distance. Something always weird happened around the Spiderwicks, ever since her uncle had gone missing and his daughter spouted stories about fairies until her dying days. Then Malory’s little family showed up, and well…you shouldn’t cross paths with a black cat or walk under an open ladder, and you shouldn’t talk to the family who speak with monsters. Malory was avoided by most anyone in the town, only a handful of the citizens either didn’t care about her family’s history, or believed her. Chuck, the owner of the local secondhand book shop in town, had his own share of witnessing the strange and unusual. Hell, he even had a brownie living in his shop, who kept the place clean and free of moths. The creature was shy, though, and both him and Malory had only caught glimpses of it, despite all the honey Malory had tried to bribe it with. Chuck was probably the closest person Malory had to a friend, though they didn't hang out outside of the shop.

"Are you sure you're human?"

Malory had been asked this by a Tree Elf that lived in the woods around Malory's house once. The elf had been alive for nearly a century, not wandering much farther than the roots of their birth tree, but Malory saw them often enough while hunting in the area. Of course, Malory's innitial respone was "Of course I am, what else could I be?" And didn't think about it much farther than that. The Tree Elf didn't elaborate, and Malory moved on. Malory didn't have any reason to believe she was anything other than human, and she honestly forgot the conversation shortly afterwards.

Though Malory was unaware, there could be a case made that something wasn't quite...normal, with her.

  • The thought of Zev on an airplane managed to make Malphas smile. The giant black beast would not take kindly to being placed in a crate and stuffed in the bottom of a plane. Fortunately, the two of them did not need to worry about that. Teleportation was their primary mode of transportation. This little talent of his was the only way he could show up instantly with the mention of a single word

When she asked what word to use, the hybrid shrugged. He did not want it to be a word she used often. It had to be incredibly uncommon. He thought about it for a moment before thinking of something. "How about hopscotch?" Now there is a word you do not hear every day. "If you find yourself in any sort of trouble, just say that word and I will appear." He laughed a little knowing how ridiculous this sounded.

Her inquiry about returning home was enough to bring Zev's mood down. He was always so dramatic. No sooner than the words left her lips did he shove his snout into her leg. "You can go home, Malory. I know the last couple of days have been unusual to say the least, but you can return to your normal life. If anything goes wrong, just use the spell to summon me." He looked over at Zev before continuing. "I am sure we will see each other again. I just hope it is under better circumstances."

  • | It's okay! Trust me, I get it. I have a few replies to get to on my end. Was a busy weekend overall, and I didn't sleep well whatsoever last night, so I may or may not respond tonight lol. Also, I love that! I wanted a bumble bee badly, but I've never gotten the courage to actually go and get a tattoo. |

  • He smiled at the mention of Zev. The beast was a big softie though Monty would probably describe Malphas the same way. His desire to help always seemed to outweigh any malevolent task he was given by his mother. There was a reason why the two did not talk much these days. They were so different.

"He is not used to the company. I, well we travel often so good company can be hard to find." The hybrid was pleased to hear that she slept well. He barely slept spending most of the night going over options. He hoped she would be pleased with his offer and not take it the wrong way. Given what he was and who he was related to, Malphas would not blame Malory in the slightest if she desired to never cross paths with him again.

"You can grab your things immediately." He did not seem to mind the quip about Maleficent. If she really was the reason for all of this chaos he would be just as pissed off as Malory was. "I spent most of the night thinking things over and I have an offer for you." He grabbed the coin she had been given the night before and held it out before continuing.

"I am not sure if this will work or if you have a particular object you would like to use, but I was thinking maybe I can place an enchantment on an object like this that would allow you to summon me at any point. If something happens and you think that you need help, you can simply hold the object and mutter a word and I will appear." He shrugged not exactly sure what she would think about an idea like that. He had been up all night trying to think of a way to help out in some way. She was worth the time.

  • | I'm lacking creativity this week, so beware it isn't the best response. As for the wedding, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I'm in the wedding, and there's definitely going to be alcohol. Can't wait lol. And nice! What kind of tattoo did you get? I've always wanted one, but haven't been brave enough to do it yet. |

  • Was it the drug that initially met her tongue and disappeared down her throat to unleash its coating within the emptiness of her stomach? Or was it her own mind playing more tricks on her? Her brain was unique in its own magnificent way, having to relearn throughout the years what should have been tattooed within each lobe that made up her entire being. Yet, it was much different than anyone else's; its reality mixed with a dream-like whirl of memories and stories. So was it the drugs, or was it her mind unleashing its faults and playing out the very events that displayed out before her?

There was no way within a few minutes that her oxy managed to meet every neuron, brain cell, and blood cell within her body. So it must have been the mixture of hallucinations that erupted before her eyes. And as if fate would have it, the very moment an unknown, strange woman came into the light of the streetlights that stood high above them, Cairi’s foot managed to dig its way into an uneven crack within the sidewalk beneath her feet; causing her ankle to twist harshly, and having her fall onto her right hip.

It was then, as well, that the words “duck, lady!”, flung into the air.

Her breath was taken out of her lungs the moment she impacted the cold, wet cement. A few tiny pebbles dug into her palm as her hand braced the fall, yet those eyes of hers were immediately locked on the blonde-haired woman that held in her hands a weapon that was unbeknownst to her; a mini crossbow.

Cairi was speechless; either from the scene before her, or the pain that crept through her right side and burning sensation within her palm. As if matters couldn’t be worse, even her dealer had managed to see the events unfold, yet instead of coming to the aid of his client, he fled the scene in a daze and hurry.

“W-what…?” A formal sentence couldn’t even be made, but quickly Cairi gathered herself into an upright position on the sidewalk, mere 15 feet from the blonde. Her hand swept across the wounded one; noting the tiny pebbles that created indents within the cracks of her palms, “What just happened?” Her voice wavered with the three words. The adrenaline coursing through her veins, mixed with the substance that gradually seeped into her blood, made her rather unaware of the fantasy version of another world that just took place feet away from her.

  • //I am so very sorrys it has been awhile, I've dealth with a lot including mental health. Oh! I hadn't known that, what kinds of dragons? Maybe Andronika could be a new type of dragon she meets?//

  • | I am well! Work has been hectic, and I've been assisting my best friend with a lot of her wedding stuff. How about you? |

  • -Hey! I did get it. I have been slow to reply over the last two weeks and am working on replies today and tomorrow. If you are ever curious, I also keep a tab on all replies owed and update it when I'm on in the last section of my page. :)

  • | I apologize for the long wait! I am working on your reply now, and will flesh it out and send tomorrow if I have a chance to. :) |

  • [Thank you for waiting!]

“Giants?” Brigit perks up while leaning her chin on her hand. “You’ve hunted giants?” This was interesting. She could go on asking about all of the details about Malory’s run-ins with giants, but perhaps that could be saved for another time. “You’ll have to tell me how you can pull off such a score.” Brigit knows of the power some giants have. She’s seen them kill some of her close friends and has lost her beloved wolf to them. Not to forget the war over Ireland she had with a giant clan.

She takes the cup of coffee offered to her. “Thank you.” She eyes the contents in the cup before tipping it to her lips and easily swallows a quarter of the cup. “So many different ways to prepare coffee, it’s impressive sometimes,” Brigit says to herself before setting the cup down and turning back to Malory.

“I will not kill them. I won’t allow anyone to harm them either.” That last part was said a little defensively. “I was here in… your territory following a lead on a different matter when I came across one of those dragons. I can move them further north, into the Northern American Red Zones, where they can hunt freely and hurt no one.” Some live in the Red Zones, but all who live there know the risk of living in an area not controlled by any governments or gods. Of course, Brigit would be sure to set the dragons in an area far away from the nearest settlement.

“We don’t have a lot of time and there is one detail that’s going to be a challenge. Getting the dragons from here to the Red Zone.” She takes a moment to consider the possibilities for this particular matter. Her hand grabs for her cup again and brings it to her lips, but she pauses just before. “I considered riding them but the distance is too great. We’d attract CIA and JTF once we cross the Canadian border. That’s if we survive FBI agents.” She shrugs the idea away, now tipping the cup again and drinking more coffee. “You said you’re a freelancer? Got any connections that might transport several angry acid-spitting dragons?”
