HISTORY
Merlyn has never known her true parentage.
Found abandoned on the doorstep of the Greyspring Home for Girls, Merlyn had only her name and the handknit blanket she was wrapped in to call her own. Life was harsh at the girls home, resources and support were scarce due to a war that raged within Aternia at the time, so Merlyn often took to stealing and fighting for both her survival and the other girls until she reached adulthood.
Upon reaching the age of eighteen, Merlyn was kicked from the home. She wandered the streets of Aternia's capital homeless for several months until she came across a flyer advertising enrollment for the Crownsguard, a small selective group dedicated to the protection of Aternia's sovereign as bodyguards and assassins. Merlyn eagerly enrolled and, despite an intially rocky start, she excelled in her training and became the youngest member to ever be inducted into the Crownsguard at the age of nineteen.
Over the course of the next two years, Merlyn bonded with her fellow paladins and even struck up a bond with Aternia's then sovereign Queen Astrid who developed a motherly affection for the young woman. Over time Merlyn became renown for her heroism and easy-going nature, gaining respect amongst her superiors and loyalty from her peers. Her bravery eventually earned her the title The Azure Paladin, a title that heartened her friends and frightened her enemies, due to the blue armor she wore.
Unfortunately, Merlyn's time among the Crownsguard would end with tragedy. On a cold winter night, while Merlyn was away on an assignment, Queen Astrid was murdered in her bed. But her life was not the only thing stolen that night; the Heart of Aternia, a magical amulet that chose all of Aternia's sovereigns, was taken by the assassin in the hopes of using it for ill.
Though she hid it Merlyn was both heartbroken and enraged, she hunted the assassin with fervor and eventually cornered him on the capital's outskirts. In a desperate attempt to kill her, the assassin tried to use the Heart's power but, deeming him unworthy of wielding it's might, it turned him to ash instead.
Merlyn, relieved that Astrid's killer was no longer a threat, made to retrieve the amulet from the assassin's ashes. Only to find it fly towards her and wrap itself around her throat.
The Heart chooses the ruler.
And it had deemed Merlyn worthy.
It imbued the young paladin with its magic and formed a link with her that only it could break. Merlyn fainted as power permeated every inch of her. When Merlyn next awoke she was surrounded by the Archons, the individuals who made up the Council of Five and helped to govern the kingdom, who bowed to her and told her that she was now queen.
