Magic of the Soul

Far away, high in the Himalayas, dragons roam the sky. Soaring high above where humans could survive, they lived in valleys and caves. Small villages, communities, of long-lived beings tucked away from the advancement of the world. The birth of children was rare, with not many eggs hatching successfully. And food became scarcer as the years went by. Dalinda’s egg was one of the lucky ones.

Born into a family of dragons with magic abilities, Dalinda’s gifts made her unique still. Her mother was blessed with water magic, which she used for healing. Her father was gifted with earth magic, often using his gifts to plow gardens for those dragons who could shift forms. These dragons were referred to as Draki.

Dalinda, like her parents and grandparents, was such a Draki. Before she was even born, her parents knew something was different. There had been no lavender dragons born in centuries. Rumors swirled as he egg sat in the hatchery. Once the egg cracked, it didn’t take long to understand why she was different.

Shifters were rare among dragons, but not unheard of in the community. It ran in her family line, but the swath of blonde hair she was hatched with, even on four feet left everyone surprised. It was clear, at some point, she would begin to shift. Though even as a young hatchling learning to talk and fly, different types of magic answered her call. By the time she was considered a teenager in the dragon community, she had used every type of magic known to their people. Dalinda was what the dragon’s histories called a Soul Mage. A jack of all trades with magic. Able to use all, but unable to master none. They were considered more dangerous than a dragon who had mastered a single magic because they were hard to defend against in battle.

As she grew older, blood magic attempted to dominate her magic use, but her parents forbade it. Cautioned her to try every other magic first. She never learned why when it was a natural magic in their world. The only thing her parents ever told her was that it was dangerous for their family to indulge in violence and blood magic.

Dalinda had learned from every mage in her village and still needed more lessons to have learned control of all her magic. Her parents sent her many days flight away to a school for dragon mages. While she was there learning, she learned that an illness had struck her village and those around it. Dalinda’s mother had used her magic to try help those suffering and try to find a cure. Instead, her mother ended up contracting it.

By this time, Dalinda was near three hundred years old. Considered a child by most dragon standards, she demanded to be allowed to fly home and help her village. The school refused to let her leave, informing her that her parents had told them not to allow her to leave. It was their attempt to protect her. Dalinda raged and destroyed a portion of the school, but the time the school allowed her to leave in order to save their building it was too late.

Dalinda flew home to find both her parents had passed. She arrived just in time for the burial ceremony. Her father’s heart was broken and though he tried to hang on, losing his mate who had been by his side for centuries was too much. A few weeks later he died as well, of what Dalinda could only call a broken heart. Statues were erected for her parents in a memorial garden. Dalinda spent most of her time there, angry, hurt, sad, and lost.

Her grandparents had left the village centuries ago and no one knew where they had settled. With no one else to keep her in the village, she returned to the school, even helping rebuild what she had destroyed. She remained there until she reached five hundred. A time when dragons began to wander the world to find a place in it or to learn and bring back useful things to their people. While she returned to train on and off for years, the world had captured her heart and her mind.

Humans and other races were fascinating. The modern technology was almost like magic to her as it advanced over the decades. She traveled all over the world, using magic to hide herself as she soared the skies. Though even the skies were getting clouded with people in airplanes.

After many years of traveling and exploring the world, she decided to settle in New York City. She needed a place to call her own. She’d started her hoard many centuries ago, far away from where humans could tread. Now, she lived in the bustling city full a rainbow of people. She’d always loved art and soon found herself learning to tattoo and years later opened her own tattoo parlor called The Hoard. No one in the city knew she was a dragon, though many knew she was a mage and came to her for help.

Personality

When Dalinda's parents died it changed something in her. She did her best to shove the broken pieces down, but there was a rage that burned in her. A darkness that crept through her thoughts and her mind. The call to danger and violence was strong. She drowned it out over the years exploring, and as the times moved towards modern times, partying and indulging in vices that would kill a human.

More than once over the years, when she delved to deep into that darkness she would awake to situations she'd rather not be in. Harming people. Staying in drunken hazes for days at a time, until she didn't know how she got where she was or who she was with. It led to worse and worse actions, until someone she cared about stepped in and wrestled her back from the edge.

During the good times, Dalinda was a caring, loving, adrenaline junkie who loved hard and lived hard. The dark times made her dangerous, unpredictable, and violent. Some over the centuries had commented that it was as if she became obsessed by something. Something dark, cold, and pure evil. She blamed it on whatever sent her over the edge and refused to talk about it anymore. Most of the time, she didn't remember what she did and others had to fill in the blanks.

She uses her art as an outlet since she started tattooing. If she's not working on a client, then she's designing tattoos, or drawing. When she's not at work, she's often at bars or clubs. Anywhere that is loud, lively, and fun. She hasn't returned home in centuries, but the distant family she still has is important to her as are people she claims as family in the modern world.
