He belonged to one.
The wrong person walked into the wrong place at the wrong moment. What happened on that night, as a result, he lost his life. Or rather, what little of a life he could have had at that point. It started with the wrongful footsteps of a homeless kid into the back of an abandoned theatre with the intention of finding refuge. Jason was nineteen, and had burned any of the bridges he had crossed over the past few years. When the night had ended in heroin withdrawals among other life-shaking events, when things couldn't have gotten any further down, he was soon to be proven wrong.
Along came Ophelia, the restless spirit that claimed the theatre. Since she first made her presence known, the ghost put a chill in the young man's bones. The longer he remained in the theatre after his first terrible night, the more attached the spectral woman became. Attachment soon grew to a level of obsession, causing aggravation in return from Jason. It was a game of tolerance... up until the last of his fuse was lit.
Eventually, agitating the spirit in the decrepit building caused something to snap within her. The act would result in a curse that seeped into his being and put his life on hold.
What was once flesh withered to the scarred bone. What were once piercing blue eyes became densely hollow sockets that showed not an ounce of reflection if a light was shown into them. What were once teeth were turned into fangs. A loss of humanity was in place, as something far more demonic to have altered his being from that point on.
It's hard to say what he is.
To say that he is a demon wouldn't be truthful in its entirety, but... its a start.
In a way, he lost everything, yet he was something far stronger than his former self. He lost a life; what he gained was so much more.
The spirit's curse came with another side effect, Kei learned all too quickly. It happened during a night at rock bottom where he lay in a corner with a smoking gun. Kei woke up to the sign of dried blood and an empty shell that had failed to do its job—even at point blank. The demon was immortal, and would come to prove it, time and time again. It all seemed to come together as a dangerous combination that would spur on his self-destructive tendencies for the next few decades.
The man was nearly untraceable... so he started building a reputation. What was once just fighting for survival developed beyond that into something far more... habitual. He began taking mercenary and theft jobs where he could get them, acting at night and disappearing back into the building during the day. Kei had little respect for the law and worried little about whether his actions would catch up to him.
As a result, "Kei's" baseline demeanor was one that left much to be desired. He had a tendency to be short-tempered and inhospitable when it came to feedback from those he crossed paths with. Empathy was an abandoned concept during these years and continued to be an unresolved issue thereafter. He had kept a stronger record of pushing people aside than keeping them around. These traits left Kei on a clear course for a breaking point, one way or another. Whether it would be his last stroke of bad luck or not.

"Kei" | No. 279 | Bronze | Rogue Class | Hunter ID
The Hunter Society came into play after yet another rock bottom. This came about after an impromptu hunt with none other than the Huntress, Alice D. O'Malley. The two were acquaintances turned friends. She later would end up as a mentor and best friend he would put his trust in more than anyone. Where he saw nothing in himself, she saw something of potential. It was the second time that she had suggested that he join the ranks of the Hunters distinguished within the organization. In search of stability and something of a purpose, this time Jason accepted.
Once entering the HSHQ building, he was thrust into interviews, psychological examinations, and physical testing. By the end, his reasons were found as credible. After Alice's sudden 'demonstration' of the curse's ability, he was allowed forward.
